Posted on

An air conditioner that is not functioning as it should can cause more harm than you might think. When your air conditioner at home is not working properly, it's not only an inconvenience, it can pose certain health risks, including these four.

Respiratory Tract Infections - When air conditioners are not maintained properly, it increases the risk of getting certain respiratory tract infections such as colds, sore throats, problems with sinuses and laryngitis. Symptoms of respiratory tract infections include runny nose, fever, coughing, feeling stuffed up and loss of voice. These types of infections are caused by bacteria. When this bacteria is coming from air that is not being circulated properly or a dirty air filter, it is time have the air conditioning in your home repaired.

Legionnaires' Disease - This severe type of pneumonia is caused by bacterium called legionella. Symptoms include a fever as high as 104 degrees, muscle pain, headache, confusion and a cough that might produce blood. It can be very serious, especially for those who are older or who have compromised immune systems. The bacteria that causes this sometimes fatal illness can be found in the moist environment of an air conditioner.

Allergic Reactions - If someone is allergic or highly sensitive to any types of fungus, this could be a health risk for you if your air conditioner contains mold. Besides allergic reactions, mold can produce mycotoxins that lead to other health issues. Mold in an air conditioner can be prevented by keeping ducts free from debris and condensation. If you suspect you have mold in your air conditioning, it is important not to run it. You will need to contact a professional contractor right away who has experience in cleaning up mold.

Chronic Headaches - If your air conditioner is not working properly it could be the cause of your chronic headaches. When trying to determine of your air conditioner is the culprit, try to keep track of when you get the headaches. Do you get them more while you're inside your home with the air conditioning running? If so, it might be worth it to have your air conditioner inspected and repaired. Other common symptoms associated with headaches and poor air quality include fatigue and dizziness.

If you have ongoing health problems, especially any of the ones listed above, you might want to make sure your air conditioning is working properly. If you know it needs to be repaired contact an HVAC contractor, Shenandoah Air Conditioning & Heating.
